ABOUT VISUAL COMMUNICATIONS
Founded in 1970, Visual Communications is the first
Asian Pacific media arts center in the nation. The
mission of Visual Communications is to promote
intercultural understanding through the creation,
presentation, preservation and support of media works
by and about Asian Pacific Americans. Visual
Communications was created with the understanding that
media and the arts are important vehicles to organize
and empower communities, build connections between
generations, challenge perspectives, and create an
environment for critical thinking, necessary to build
a more just and humane society. That understanding is demonstrated through the commitment to excellence in the media arts at the grassroots level through a range of programs that promote honest and sensitive portrayals of Asians and Asian Pacific Americans. These programs are complemented by the long-standing collaborative efforts with other community organizations and a commitment to the development of an informed community.
Armed with a Camera is partially funded by the James
Irvine Foundation and the Linda Mabalot Legacy Fund.

LAST DAY TO REGISTER TO VOTE IS TODAY!

Pasadena, CA - Center for Asian Americans United for Self Empowerment (CAUSE), is targeting several communities in southern California to register Asian Pacific American (APA) voters for the upcoming November 8 elections. Communities include Hacienda Heights, Thai Town (Hollywood), Garden Grove, Westminster and Irvine. The deadline to register to vote is by 5 p.m. on Monday, October 24.

With last year's Presidential Elections and the recent Los Angeles Mayoral Elections still fresh on voters' minds, it has been an interesting challenge this fall to sustain voter interest in this year's Special Elections. "Despite 'voter fatigue,' however, it is vital that CAUSE continues the work of registering new voters, and educating everyone on the issues that will affect their lives as Californians. As Asian Pacific Americans, it is also crucial that we show up to vote. Our vote is our voice, and we need to make sure that our voices are heard loud and clear in this and in every election," says Sharon Owyang, CAUSE Executive Director.

Los Angeles County voters have an opportunity to vote early (October 26 to November 4) at 11 Touchscreen Voting locations. For locations and more details, visit www.lavote.net or call the L.A. County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk's Multi-lingual hotline at (800) 481-8683. For voter information in Orange County, visit www.oc.ca.gov/election or call the following phone numbers for Asian language assistance:
Vietnamese - (714) 567-7585 (Mr. Leslie Le) or (714) 567-7581 (name unavailable)
Chinese - (714) 567-5143 (Ms. Delicia Hsu)
Korean - (714) 567-5141 (Mr. Jay Koo)

In order to prepare APA voters to make an informed decision, CAUSE has begun distributing the non-partisan Easy Voter Guides in Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese - free to the public. Voter registration forms, absentee ballot applications and how-to-vote audiotapes are also available free to those who call CAUSE's toll-free voter assistance hotline at (888) 809-3888. Operators are available Monday through Friday, 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM to answer questions and help voters. For those who prefer to use the Internet, voters can visit www.causeusa.org for more information on CAUSE's calendar of events, voter resources, and the CAUSE hand out, "Statewide Special Election: Propositions on the November 2005 Ballot," which gives a description, list of major supporters, and funders of each proposition.

API Community Observes
National Domestic Violence Awareness Month
API Community Leaders and Organizations
Join Campaign to End Domestic Violence

MONTEREY PARK, CA – To mark National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Asian Pacific Islander Domestic Violence Task Force of San Gabriel Valley announces its establishment and to call for attention to the issues of domestic violence in the API community.

"National Domestic Violence Month reminds us all of those who have died as a result of domestic violence. We owe it to their memories to do everything we can to prevent more lives from being lost to this terrible senseless crime," said Vanda Yung, co-chair of API DV Task Force. "It is critical that the community is aware of the resources that are available in helping victims of domestic violence," said Yung.

Together the API DV Task Force in conjunction with local and federal agencies recommit to eliminating domestic violence and reaching out to victims of domestic violence. This is a preventable social problem that requires collective action and for communities to unite to help end this devastating issue. With dedication and vigilance, we can increase safety and hope for thousands of our citizens.

Teresa Lin, co-chair of API DV Task Force adds, " Every woman or man has the right of seeking happiness in their relationship, that right is not to be violated by anyone."

The API DV Task Force is supported by Assemblymember Judy Chu, Mayor Frank Venti, Police Chief Jones Moy, Asian Pacific Family Center, Asian Pacific Women's Center, Buddhist Tzu Chi Free Clinic, California Women's Law Center, Center for Pacific Asian Family, Chinatown Service Center, Chinese American Citizen Alliance, Chinese American Human Social Services, Department of Children and Family Services, Department of Health Services, Department of Public Social Services, Department of Children and Family Services, Department of Health Service - Violence Prevention Program, Kaiser Permanente, Korean American Family Service Center, Korean Family Services, Little Tokyo Service Center, Neighborhood Legal Services, South Asian Network, and United For Justice

Our mission is to eliminate domestic violence in Asian Pacific Islander communities by providing outreach, education, and advocacy. The members include but are not limited to shelters, legal services, law enforcement, healthcare professionals, family services, advocates, and community members at large.
